Don't you know the story of the Nightbryn?
When I was little, I often visited my grandma. She was a kind person, that always told me stories every time I came to her house which was only a few streets away from the house my family lived in. There’s one story I’ll never forget.
It was a dark and stormy night. Me and my friends, all around the age of ten, decided to pull a dumb trick on our parents and sneak out in the middle of the night to play together. However, my grandmother caught us on the street and called us to come into her house. We all sat onto the floor into the living room. I remember her looking out of the window, terrified. She went to close the door as well as all windows. When she was finished, she went back into the living room. Looking at all of us, she asked: “Don’t you know the story of the Nightbryn?” Without waiting for an answer, she started to tell:
“A long, long time ago, a dark force used to rule here where the village is standing. His rule ended when us humans came along and claimed this land for themselves. But he wouldn’t take his dethronement by the humans lightly. Instead, he started to hunt for kids not older than nineteen in his former territory. We humans couldn’t do anything about him besides giving him a name. Legend has it, that a person abducted by the Nightbryn will be brought far away from his home, to a place where the shadows still rule. There, the person will encounter his biggest fears and terrors and relive the same nightmares over and over again, until the Nightbryn has harvested any last bit of humanity in them and they become shadows themselves. And even if they think, they managed to escape the Nightbryn, then they are wrong, because no one is able to escape him.”
The little ten-year-old boys we were back then believed in this story. But the older we grew, the more we thought my dear grandmother just wanted us to not go out in the streets during the night.
A wall behind our backs, we wish that we would have believed her, as a dark figure stands in front of us. We shiver, as the shadow maliciously asks: “Don’t you know the story of the Nightbryn?”
